About Jet Zarkadas

Jet Zarkadas is the owner and founder of Los Griegos Studio, LLC. She currently works and resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Cultured Beginnings

While still an art and design student at the University of Illinois, Jet Zarkadas began her career designing and installing windows at Saks 5th Avenue and Blum's Vogue on Chicago's "Magnificent Mile." After a stint as Archival Librarian at the Chicago Tribune, she and her husband moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was quickly hired by one of that city's leading art galleries to install exhibitions and assist in sales.

Horsing around

For 13 years following, Jet was partner/owner of Animated Images, a film and video production house making animated commercials and short subjects for some of the largest businesses in the southwest. She has also exhibited her art in galleries in the U.S. and Europe.

After a trip to Europe and the Middle East in the 70's, Jet developed an obsession with how people live within their environments, the architecture they reside in, the colors they surround themselves with, the furniture and textiles they use. Out of this obsession, a lifetime habit of travel, exploration and education ensued. From primitive village dwellings to the great houses, palaces and castles of Europe, inspiration followed.

Influences and Inspirations

Jet's influences have been diverse and range from the classicists such as Andrea Palladio and the Adamses to William Morris, Edward Lutyens and Frank Lloyd Wright, to the modernists, Le Corbusier and Mies Van de Rohe. She also has been greatly inspired by the work of mid-century modernists Rudolph Schindler, Richard Neutra, Charles & Ray Eames, George Nelson and the Saarinens. She is fascinated by the contemporary work of Frank Gehry, Robert Venturi, Richard Meier, Rem Kohlhaas and Tadao Ando.

Drawing inspiration as well from Balthus, Bonnard and Matisse to the elegant constructions of Louise Nevelson and Louise Bourgeois. Her inspirations include personal heroines Mary Colter and Andree Putman, role model Marylis Muhlhauser (Maga), and Margarita Kriaris (dancer, artist and bon vivant). Their ardor for the vitality of life and creativity fuel Jet's artistic passion.

Horsing around

In 1998, Topher House and Stasia Tikkannen brought their talents and skills to the studio's efforts. Topher, with a degree in sculpture and art & architectural history from the University of New Mexico, is an excellent production artist and keen facilitator. Stasia, also a UNM graduate with a degree in fine art, produces detailed finishes and original artwork. Recently, Keek Lucchino has brought her knowledge of furniture and textiles to Los Griegos Studio, LLC. Her eye for fine style and design, honed by her experience as an international buyer for The Limited and Simply Santa Fe, brings a rich textural addition. Together they bring a collaborative tour de force; able to articulate Jet's aesthetic vision. With the help of other artisans, Jet and her team deliver high style via nationally recognized projects.

Jet's education extends from ASU in Tempe to University of Illinois, Chicago. She then resided in Chicago, where she worked for the Chicago Tribune.
